BOSTON, Mass. – On Saturday, January 27, the Emmanuel College Softball team spent the day volunteering at the St. Ambrose Family Shelter in Dorchester, Mass. The community service initiative is part of the Emmanuel Athletic Department's commitment to serving the local community that each varsity program participated in during the 2017-18 academic year.
At St. Ambrose, the Softball team split into three groups volunteering around the campus throughout the day. One group was responsible for cleaning and organizing the classrooms, another was in the kitchen and a third around the grounds doing maintenance and yard work.
"Emmanuel's commitment to the local community has been an important part of my experience as a student-athlete," said junior catcher Casey Sheehan (Medway, Mass.). "I was inspired by our local volunteering efforts to travel internationally last summer with Beyond Sports to South Africa where we volunteered hosting clinics for local children to learn the game of softball."
The goal of St. Ambrose Family Shelter is to provide shelter, support and hope for homeless families in transition. The shelter offers a variety of services to prepare families for successful and independent living.
