BOSTON, MA - The Emmanuel Women's Tennis Team upended Newbury College in a non-conference match played at the Winsor School on Wednesday night. The Saints cruised to an 8-1 win over the visiting Nighthawks, en route to their fourth victory of the season. Emmanuel swept the three doubles matches and won five of the six singles matches, as the team improved to 4-4 on the season.
Senior captain Rachel Strauss (Westwood, MA) kicked off the scoring for the Saints with a 6-0, 6-3 win at first singles. Sophomore Megan Harrington (Leicester, MA) defeated her second singles opponent, 6-2, 6-2. Sophomore Alexandra Shakra (Bedford, NH) won at third singles, shutting out her opponent, 6-0, 6-0.
Sophomore Catherine Dunphy (Duxbury, MA) came away with a 6-2, 6-1 win at fourth singles, while freshman Victoria Trull (Lowell, MA) won at fifth singles. Trull was also named to the GNAC Weekly Honor Roll after two singles victories in last week's matches. Freshman Erin Thornton (Worcester, MA) played a tough match at sixth singles, but was defeated by her Nighthawk opponent, 6-4, 6-4.
The Saints then went on to sweep the three doubles contests. Strauss and Harrington paired up for a win at 1st doubles. The sophomore team of Brianna Murphy (Wilbraham, MA) and Taylor Kelly (Poughkeepsie, NY) improved to 4-2 on the season after their 8-4 win over Newbury. Freshman Hannah Marks (Fulton, NY) and sophomore Jenny Saint-Aubyn (Mashpee, MA) picked up an 8-0 win at third doubles.
With this win, Emmanuel improves to 4-4 overall and 1-2 in Great Northeast Athletic Conference play. The Saints will play on the road this Saturday (10/4) at The Weymouth Club, taking on the Lions of Emerson College in a GNAC match beginning at 6:30pm
