THE LEAD: Junior pitcher Megan Kieselback tossed her second complete-game shutout this week to power the Emmanuel College softball team past Finlandia University, 5-0, Wednesday morning in Day Three action of the NTC Spring Games.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Both starting pitchers were in control early as Kieselback and Finlandia's Denia Bent (Cape Coral, Fla.) dueled in the circle.
  • In the fifth inning, the Lions threatened to take the lead getting runners on second and third with two outs but Kieselback was able to strand the pair in scoring position to keep the score at 0-0.
  • Emmanuel also threatened in the bottom half of the fifth, getting runners on second and third with only one out after singles by freshman third basemen Emily Blachard (Sturbridge, Mass.) and sophomore centerfield Sarah Hoisl (West Hartford, Conn.) but Bent was able to strand both runners to keep the slate clean through five.
  • Bent led off the sixth with a single and worked her way to third but Kieselback worked out of the inning to give the Saints the opportunity to go ahead in the bottom half of the inning.
  • The Saints broke the game open with five in the sixth inning, collecting six hits in the frame.
  • Kieselback helped her own cause with what proved to be the game-winning RBI single up the middle, scoring Meaghan Price (Corning, N.Y.) and Megan Long (Smithfield, R.I.) to make it 2-0.
  • Hoisl made it 3-0 with an RBI single before junior outfielder Olivia Burgos (Newington, Conn.) drove in two insurance runs with a two-RBI single up the middle.
  • Kieselback made the lead hold by retiring the side in the seventh to pick up her second win of the year, improving to 2-1 overall while Bent suffered the loss and falls to 3-2.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Burgos and Blanchard each finished the game with two hits for the Saints.
  • EC junior catcher Casey Sheehan (Medway, Mass.) was great defensively, throwing a runner out trying to steal second and picking a runner off first base on a wheel play.
  • Bent and Maegan Kraft each recorded two hits a piece for the Lions
  • Kieselback allowed just seven hits to go along with five strikeouts for her second complete-game shutout of the week.
