LACROSSE Q&A WITH LOGAN CARR
Feb. 23, 2011
What has the team been working on since practices started?
It's been a lot of stick work since we have been indoors and we have been shooting and working on defense. There are quite a bit of new players as well as people who have played before. It's exciting and the coaches make it really fun.
How is the team getting along in its first year?
There are about eight of us who have played before and we are really able to help out those who haven't and encourage them to keep working. It's a tough sport to learn since you have a stick in your hands and you are always trying to catch the ball. Everyone is getting along great though, and we haven't had any problems.
What has been your experience with lacrosse?
I played all through high school after picking it up freshman year. It's still a new sport in a lot of places. It was originally something fun to do when I wasn't playing soccer but I ended up really enjoying it.
Did you have any reservations about playing lacrosse while also playing for Emmanuel's women's soccer team?
I was hesitant (to join) because we do spring tournaments with soccer but I was definitely interested. I was on the committee who interviewed the coaches and (Athletic Director) Pam (Roecker) encouraged me to play.
What has it been like to work with Head Coach Amanda Laws and Assistant Coach Katharine Liposky?
Our coaches have awesome credentials. Amanda (Laws) played at Yale and Kat (Liposky) played at UMass. They are both awesome lacrosse players and are really knowledgeable. They incorporate conditioning when it needs to be and I really enjoy them. We are watching film and our coaches are sending us videos. Anytime we don't have the gym to work out in, they are taking the time to teach us more (about the game).
What are you looking forward to most this season?
I'm really looking forward to the first game. We play on March 17 and I'm really excited to see what is going to happen. It's hard to tell now since we are just playing against each other but after that first game, we will have a better understanding of where we are.
What is the transition like between soccer and lacrosse?
They are very different sports. Soccer is a contact sport while lacrosse has minimal checking. Soccer is more continuous while lacrosse has more whistles involved. It was tough at first and we have girls who have played soccer before who are still learning.
How much have you improved by working with the team?
I think that I've improved a lot with all the work, considering I haven't played seriously in three years. Even from the beginning, two weeks ago or so, we have improved so much. We have so much potential and we are interested to see the growth from the first game to the last one.
