BOSTON, Mass. – The law firm of Garrett and Barrett led the way for the Emmanuel College men's volleyball team as they defeated Elms College 3-0 (25-15, 32-30, 25-17) in Boston on Thursday night.
Wingard tallied 15 kills and added two digs and two aces, while McGarry earned seven kills along with a .417 hitting percentage and two digs. Senior Drew Jordan (Braintree, Mass.) also had a solid offensive night, putting down seven kills and adding an ace.
After the teams traded the first 14 points of the set, EC rattled off seven straight points to open up a 14-7 lead. The Blazers were able to get as close as five points, but a kill by senior Julian Hess and a service ace by Jordan put the Saints back up by eight at 21-13. Two kills by Wingard in the final five points were enough to give the Saints the 25-14 set.
The second set was a back-and-forth affair, as neither team led by more than three points at any time. Elms had a 20-17 lead and was primed to even the match, but the Saints tied things at 20 after a service error and two Wingard kills. Neither team was able to capitalize on set point as the Blazers squandered five chances and the Saints gave up one before Wingard finally finished things at 32-30 with yet another kill.
The Saints opened up the third set with four straight points and looked primed to cruise to a straight set win, but the Blazers responded with five of the next six to knot things up at 5-5 thanks to two kills from sophomore Gabriel Reis Levy (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil).
Emmanuel found their killer instinct later in the set, scoring seven of the last nine points to win the final set 25-17.
Junior Jorge Rojas (San Juan, Puerto Rico) dished out 32 assists for the hosts in the winning effort. As a team, the Saints posted a .322 hitting percentage with 41 kills and just 13 errors.
Next up for the Saints is a Great Northeast Athletic Conference tri-match at Lasell on Saturday afternoon. The Saints face the Lasers at 11:00 a.m. and Mount Ida College at 1:00 p.m.
