This past fall marked the inaugural season of varsity competition for the Emmanuel College Men's Golf Program. The Saints competed in six matches during the 2009 season, including the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Tournament at the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth. Emmanuel also hosted the program's first home tri-match on September 25th at Williams J. Devine Golf Course at Franklin Park.
The Saints faired well in their opening season. Emmanuel picked up the program's first-ever win on September 25th, when the Saints defeated Newbury College at Franklin Park.
Head Coach Julio Avila fielded a roster of eight players, including three competitors who received conference recognition in their rookie seasons. Eric Spanbauer (Niagara Falls, N.Y.), who captained the team as a sophomore and will graduate after only two years at Emmanuel, was named the GNAC Player of the Week on September 21st. Junior Nicholas Cyrus (Rockland, Mass.) shot a program-best score with an 85 at the Cranston Country Club in Rhode Island on October 2nd. He was named the GNAC Rookie of the Week on September 28th and was selected to the GNAC Weekly Honor Roll on October 5th. Cyrus was also Emmanuel's representative on the GNAC All-Sportsmanship Team.
Freshman Daniel Ferdenzi (Holliston, Mass.) led the Saints at the GNAC Tournament, shooting a 94 on the opening day and an 86 on the second day to finish in 22nd place. He was subsequently named to the GNAC All-Rookie Team and to the GNAC Weekly Honor Roll on October 26th.
Coach Avila will return five veterans for the 2010 campaign, including Cyrus, Ferdenzi, Patrick Dillon (Bedford, N.H.), Michael DelSignore (Narragansett, R.I.) and Edouard Maupile (Boston, Mass.). Avila will also bring in a strong class of recruits, as the Saints compete in their second season of varsity competition in the fall of 2010.
