JWU LEADS AFTER 1st DAY AT MEN'S GOLF GNACs

Johnson & Wales University shot a team score of 315 and has a 10-stroke advantage over Rhode Island College and a 13-shot lead over host UMass Dartmouth after the first day of action Saturday at the two-day, seven-team Great Northeast Athletic Conference Championships, at Allendale Country Club.

NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. - Johnson & Wales University shot a team score of 315 and has a 10-stroke advantage over Rhode Island College and a 13-shot lead over host UMass Dartmouth after the first day of action Saturday at the two-day, seven-team Great Northeast Athletic Conference Championships, at Allendale Country Club.

The defending champion Wildcats also have the top two golfers in the field after the first day. Bobby Newcomb shot a 75 and is in first place, while Steve LeDonne is in second place after shooting a 77. Bryan Picinisco of RIC is third after shooting a 78, and Derek Jensen of the Anchormen and Scott Boulis of JWU are tied for fourth after shooting scores of 79.

St. Joseph's (Maine) is fourth in the team standings at 350, Southern Maine is fifth at 353, Suffolk is sixth at 362 and Emmanuel seventh at 375. The tournament will conclude Sunday. The winner will earn the GNAC's automatic berth in the NCAA Division III Championships next spring.
