Julio Avila is the Head Men's Golf Coach at Emmanuel, which began its program in the fall of 2009. Avila formally coached the Emmanuel Men's Soccer Team. He led the program from its inception in 2002 through the 2008 season. Along with his past experience building a new Division III varsity program and his familiarity with Emmanuel and the Great Northeast Athletic Conference, Avila is a superb golfer and coach.
Coach Avila currently holds memberships at William J. Devine Golf Course (the Saints' home course) and at Club Campestre La Lima, S.A. Honduras. He has been a member of the Franklin Park Inner Club from 2005 until the present. Avila also spent seven years as a member of the caddie program at La Lima Verde Country Club in Honduras. He is a member of the Massachusetts Golf Association (MGA) and holds a United States Golf Association (USGA) handicap of 7.8.
Coach Avila has faired extremely well in several recent golf tournaments. Topping his list of notable finishes in 2008 were an October win in the Turkey Shoot Out, a second place finish in the Franklin Park Member Tournament, an "A Flight" second place finish in the Boston Open Golf Tournament, and a Top 10 finish in the Golf Channel Amateur Tour in Newport, R.I. Avila also qualified for the Mass Open Links Amateur Tournament in May of 2007 at Brookmeadow Country Club in Canton.
Coach Avila is a graduate of the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. In addition to coaching, Julio is a full-time physical education teacher and the Director of Athletics for the Fenway High School and has been there since 1998.
