BOSTON, Mass. - The Emmanuel Men's Basketball Team dropped a 76-60 non-conference decision to Rhode Island College on Thursday night in the Jean Yawkey Center. The loss was the third-straight for the Saints and dropped Emmanuel to 3-11 on the season, while the Anchormen improved to 11-5 overall.
The Anchormen jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead on a lay-up by Jake Grimes (Providence, R.I.) on RIC's second possession of the night. The visitors held on to a solid lead early in the opening period and stretched the margin to seven points at 17-10 on a steal and a lay-up by Carl Lee (Warwick, R.I.) with 8:30 on the clock.
Rhode Island College junior guard Nick Manson (Newport, R.I.) hit consecutive baseline three-pointers to give the Anchormen a 23-12 with 6:50 to play in the half. Two possessions later sophomore guard Keith Hamilton (Queens Village, N.Y.) drained a trey of his own to give RIC a 26-13 advantage.
The visitors maintained the double-figure lead until the break and took a 35-22 lead into the locker room at halftime. Manson's 11 first-half points led all scorers at the break. The Anchormen scored 14 points off of their fast-break in the opening period and held a 19-18 lead on the boards.
The Saints quickly began to chip away at the Rhode Island College lead. Emmanuel began the half with an 8-1 run, which included a fast-break jumper from freshman forward Patrick Ramsey (Easthampton, Mass.) and a pair of free throws from classmate Xavier Everson (Rochester, N.Y.). Emmanuel's run cut the RIC lead to 36-30 with 17:18 remaining.
The Saints then cut the margin to three points (39-36) on a nice feed down low from Eric Spanbauer (Niagara Falls, N.Y.) to Andre Fuller (Troy, N.Y.) with 12:35 to go. The pretty play was followed by a fast-break dunk from Lee to push the Anchormen's lead back to five, 41-36.
RIC stretched their lead to ten points on Manson's fourth trey of the night, as the Anchormen went up 50-40, with 8:59 remaining. Emmanuel's Isaiah Duke (Albany, N.Y.) then followed up a made free throw with a steal and a dunk on the break to cut the RIC lead to seven, 50-43, with 8:35 to go. After two freebies by Everson, Michael Mailhot (Norwich, Conn.) drained a baseline three-ball to cut the RIC lead to just two points at 50-48 with 7:47 left to play. Mailhot's three was part of a 8-0 Emmanuel run that lasted just over one minute.
The Anchormen then went on an 18-2 run that spanned five and a half minutes and essentially put the game away. During the stretch, RIC went 8 for 8 from the line and got two consecutive fast-break lay-ups from Lee. The Anchormen capped off the run with two final buckets by Lee in the closing minute of play, as the visitors pulled away with a 76-60 win.
Lee led all scorers with 21 points, shooting 8 for 10 from the floor and 5 for 6 from the line. Manson finished with 18 points, knocking down 4 of 6 from long range. Grimes added 15 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists for the victors. RIC's defense forced the Saints into 24 turnovers on the night. The Anchormen scored 24 points off their fast-break and scored 25 points off of the EC turnovers.
Duke finished with a team-high 17 points and 8 rebounds for the Saints. Fuller netted 13 points, to go along with his 5 rebounds and 3 blocked shots. Everson chipped in with 12 points, 7 boards and 5 assists for Emmanuel.
The Saints will return to Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action on Saturday (1/23), as Emmanuel hosts the Wildcats of Johnson & Wales University in the early game of a men's and women's double-header. The men's game is slated to start at 1pm.
