Darwin Zook began coaching at Emmanuel College in 2005. Zook was
a member of the Emmanuel staff in 2005-06 when head Coach Jamahl
Jackson was awarded GNAC Coach of the Year, and the team went 20-8
and 17-1 in conference play. Zook has been a member of the Saints'
staff during the team's first two ECAC Tournament appearances (2006
and 2008), as well as during the team's run to the finals of the
GNAC Tournament (2007 and 2009).
At Emmanuel, Zook is heavily involved in all aspects of the program, including on and off campus recruiting, opponent and self scouting with video breakdown and game planning, individual player skill development, academic supervision of players, as well as assisting the head coach with daily practice preparation and overall daily management of the program. He also worked as a Coach/Camp Counselor at Five-Star Camps. Zook, through his most recent studies obtaining a Masters Degree in Coaching at Boston University, has brought a diligence and wealth of knowledge to the Emmanuel Men's Basketball Program.
Zook began his academic journey at Fordham University in 1997 as a Communications Major. He worked at WFUV radio, the PBS radio affiliate in New York, broadcasting play by play of both Fordham Basketball and Football. Zook also covered all professional area sports teams for the station including the Knicks, Nets, Yankees, Mets and Rangers, in addition to hosting a three-hour Saturday sports talk show with Tony Reali, now host of ESPN's "Around the Horn." After 3 years, Zook left Fordham University for the opportunity to fulfill his goals of playing college basketball.
Zook transferred to the University of California Santa Cruz, where he played basketball at the Division III level for three years, including two years as a Co-Captain of the team. Zook, started his junior year and part of his senior year before an injury. Playing three positions at different times, Zook played against Division 1 programs, including Santa Clara, UC Riverside and Northern Arizona. He received a degree from UCSC with honors in Sociology.
After completing his BA at the University of California Santa Cruz, Zook became the head coach of the Waring School Boys Varsity Basketball Team in Beverly, MA. With the basketball program struggling, Zook took over and helped lead the team to a 14-win season and semifinal appearance in the playoffs, stressing teamwork over individual achievement.
While Coaching at Emmanuel and currently working on the final stages of completing his Masters Degree at Boston University, Zook has worked the previous two summers with Lionsgate Films and Columbia Pictures. In the summers of 2007 and 2008, Zook has worked on two major motion pictures filmed in the Boston area. First, he worked as Location Coordinator on "My Best Friend's Girl," starring Kate Hudson and Dane Cook. In the summer of 2008, Zook worked as a Location Assistant on box office hit "Paul Blart: Mall Cop," starring Kevin James. Zook worked on set in daily management of the movie set, as well as in the office with budget work, and daily organization of each filming site.
