Waltham, Mass. - The Emmanuel College Men's and Women's Indoor Track & Field Teams competed in Brandeis University's Reggie Poyau Memorial Invitational on Saturday afternoon. The meet offered the Saints opportunities for more great results as the competition included strictly NCAA Division III programs. Among other terrific finishes, Emmanuel received a first-place performance from freshman sprinter James Ferdenzi (Holliston, Mass.) and second-place finishes from Simone Ford (White Plains, N.Y.), Shannon McCabe (Charlestown, R.I.) and Kathleen King (North Easton, Mass.).

Ferdenzi took first place in the 55 meters and in the process set a new Emmanuel College record. His time of 6.83 just missed him qualifying time for New England Division III Championships.

Thomas Ryan Maher (Gales Ferry, Conn.) and Jordan Coulombe (Saco, Maine) competed well in the 55-meter hurdles. Maher finished in second place with a time of 8.52, while Coulombe finished in fifth with a personal-best time of 8.86. He also set a new program-record in the high jump with his 4th-place finishing leap of 5'10".

In the men's 3,000 meters, a pair of Saints ran personal bests. Maurizio Turco (Revere, Mass.) ran a time of 9:44.52, while Alen Smajic (Revere, Mass.) ran a time of 10:02.40. Both also ran impressive legs along with John Hieber (Peabody, Mass.) and Stephen Armstrong (Revere, Mass.), on the 4 x 800 meter relay team, which had a strong top-ten finish. As a team, the men finished 4th out of the six competing schools.

Leading the way for the women were McCabe, along with Brittany Sorice (Dover, N.H.) and Katasi Kulubya (Anaheim, Calif.), who each ran school record times and gained New England Division III qualifying standards in their events. McCabe's 55-meter hurdle time of 9.58 earned her a 2nd finish. Sorice's 600-meter time of 1:44.63 placed her 3rd overall. Kulubya ran the 400 meters in 62.72, also finishing 3rd overall.

The other top finisher for the women was Simone Ford. Ford continued her early season success with three 2nd place finishes in the 55 meters, 200 meters, and long jump. Ford was the leading point-getter for the Saints, earning a total of 32 points for Emmanuel, which finished 5th as a team.

Strong finishes also came from Julie Young (Derry, N.H.) who finished 5th in the 600 meters with a personal best time of 1:47.90 and Laura McNulty (Attleboro, Mass.) who finished 5th in the 55-meter hurdles with a personal best time of 10.15.

The Saints will compete again on Saturday (January 23rd) at the Wheaton College Invitational in Norton, Mass. For complete results from the Reggie Poyau Invitational, go to: http://www.goecsaints.com/sports/c-itrack/stats/2009-2010/reggiepoyau2010.html
