Saints Stop Warriors in Battle of Unbeatens

November 21, 2006 - The Emmanuel Women's Basketball Team rolled past Eastern Connecticut State University on Tuesday night, 75-61. The Saints' tenacious defense forced 36 Warrior turnovers. Both teams entered the game undefeated, but Emmanuel overpowered Eastern CT, out-rebounding the Warriors, 52-45. The Saints also scored 20 fast break points. Emmanuel's biggest lead of the game came early in the second half, when the Saints led by 28 points. Freshman guard Iman Davis (New Britain, CT) led the Saints with a career-high 18 points, 8 rebounds, 5 assists, and 5 steals. Junior guard Brittany Bushman (Portsmouth, NH) added 16 points, including 4 three-pointers. Junior guard Jade Paez (Bronx, NY) hit for 15 points and collected 7 steals, while freshman guard Tommia Davis (Gloucester, MA) chipped in with 6 points and grabbed a game-high 15 rebounds. The 3-0 Saints will be back in action on Thursday (11/30), when they travel to Lasell College to take on the Lasers in a 7:00 pm start.



Saints Take Tip-Off Championship; Paez Named Tourney M.V.P.

November 19, 2006 - The Emmanuel Women's Basketball Team cruised to a 67-47 victory over Salve Regina University on Saturday and then edged Wesleyan University, 70-63, on Sunday to take the 23rd Annual Tip-Off Tournament Championship. Junior guard Jade Paez (Bronx, NY) was the leading scorer for Emmanuel in both outings. Paez netted 15 points to go along with her 7 assists and 6 steals against Salve Regina, then hit for 20 points, including 5 three-pointers, in the championship game. She was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player for the 2nd year in a row. Freshman guard Iman Davis (New Britain, CT) added 15 points on Saturday and 11 points & 7 assists on Sunday, while senior forward LaTeisha Johnson (Dorchester, MA) chipped in with a combined 19 points and 16 rebounds. Both Davis and Johnson were named to the All-Tournament Team for Emmanuel. Freshman guard Tommia Davis (Gloucester, MA) recorded her first collegiate double-double, scoring 10 points and grabbing 12 rebounds. The Saints, who are now 2-0, will face the Warriors of Eastern Connecticut State University on Tuesday night (11/21). This game tips off at 7:00 pm in the Jean Yawkey Center.

The Men's Basketball Team hosted the 6th Annual Tip-Off Tournament. The Saints were defeated by Gwynedd Mercy College on Saturday, 80-77, and faced the College of Staten Island in the tournament consolation game on Sunday. Despite a 35-point effort from sophomore guard Rob Williams-Hinton (Oak Park, MI), the Saints fell to CSI, 83-77. Williams-Hinton scored his 35 points in 37 minutes of action, shooting 13 of 24 from the field and 4 of 9 from three-point range. Sophomore forward Mack Spellman (Clinton, NY) notched a double-double for the Saints, netting 19 points and pulling down 11 boards. Spellman also hit for 23 points and grabbed 9 rebounds in the opening round of the tournament. He was voted the All-Tournament Team member from Emmanuel. The 0-2 Saints will be back in action next Tuesday (11/28) went they host the Jeffs of Amherst College at 7:30 pm.

Saints Fall to Amherst in NCAA Tourney

November 14, 2006 - The Women's Volleyball Team was defeated in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament by 3rd seeded Amherst College. The Saints went down in three games, 30-10, 30-9, and 30-17. Emmanuel was overpowered at the net and managed just 17 kills as a team. The Saints wrapped up the year with an overall record of 21-11 and an undefeated GNAC mark (11-0). This was Emmanuel's 4th-straight 20-win season. Head Coach Joe Seid was named the GNAC Coach of the Year for the 2nd-straight year.

The Men's and Women's Cross Country Teams competed in the NCAA Division III New England Championship at Springfield College on Saturday. This year's championship was the largest ever in regional history. The Emmanuel women's team placed 27th out of 48 scoring teams (53 total), while the men placed 38th out 45 scoring teams (50 total). The New England region is the toughest in the nation, with over seven schools ranked in the top 20 nationally. The Emmanuel women's team finished ahead of all other GNAC competitors on Saturday.

Sophomore Christine Gaspar (Attleboro, MA) wrapped up her year with a strong performance, as she finished 123rd out of 321 total finishers with a time of 25:19 for the 6K distance. She was followed by junior Emily McCaffrey (East Greenwich, RI), who took 172nd place in a time of 26:45, and senior Karis Yusavitz (Philadelphia, PA), who placed 173rd with a time of 26:47. Sophomore Cathryn Lariviere (Windham, NH) followed closely behind in 177th with a time of 26:53. Freshman Amanda Strout (East Longmeadow, MA) finished in 202nd place with a time of 27:41. Senior Dorothy Shanahan (Accord, NY) closed out her collegiate career with a gutsy performance, as she completed the race with a nagging hamstring injury. Shanahan placed 207th overall with a time of 27:47 and was followed by sophomore Kim Hill (Tyngsboro, MA), who placed 262nd with a time of 29:23.

On the men's side, senior co-captains Carlos Escobar (Cambridge, MA) and Pat Chviruk (Worcester, MA) finished up their Emmanuel cross country careers by placing 167th and 264th, respectively. Juniors T.J. Griffis (Green Harbor, MA) and Matt Hickey (North Attleboro, MA) finished 211th and 215th overall. Freshmen Ben Mattson (Taunton, MA), Tim Flaherty (Mattapoisett, MA) and Rustam Allakhervediyev (Kazakhstan) placed 257th, 260th, and 275th out of 309 finishers.

The Men's and Women's Basketball Teams will open up their seasons this weekend in the Annual PEPSI Tip-Off Tournament. The women will take on Salve Regina University at 3:00 pm, while the men will face Gwynedd Mercy College at 5:00 pm on Saturday.



Emmanuel to Take On Amherst in NCAAs

November 6, 2006 - After capturing its third-straight GNAC title, the Emmanuel Women's Volleyball Team will advance to the New England Regionals of the NCAA Tournament. The New England Regionals will be hosted by MIT. The Saints received a #6 seed in the upcoming tournament. Emmanuel will take on the 3rd seeded Jeffs of Amherst College at 6:00 pm on Thursday (11/9). The Jeffs won the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Championship to receive their automatic bid to the NCAAs. Amherst now owns an overall record of 26-4, while the Saints stand at 21-10. The winner of Thursday's match will take on the winner of the (#2) MIT/(#7) Bridgewater State College match on Friday (11/10) at 7:00 pm. All New England Regional matches will take place in the Rockwell Cage on the campus of MIT. The Rockwell Cage is located at 106 Vassar Street, Cambridge, MA. Click for directions.

Saints Three-Peat! Emmanuel Advances to NCAA Tournament

November 4, 2006 - The Emmanuel Women's Volleyball Team won its third straight Great Northeast Athletic Conference Championship on Saturday, knocking off Rivier College in the championship match. The Saints defeated the Raiders in the first two games, winning 30-25 and 30-28. The Raiders came back to take the third game, 26-30, but Emmanuel rebounded and won the fourth set, 30-21. Sophomore outside hitter Lindsey Parker (New Bedford, MA) was voted the tournament's Most Valuable Player. Parker pounded down 23 kills and collected 4 blocks. Senior setter Beth Ferreira (Somerset, MA) dished out a match-high 42 assists and tallied 20 digs, while senior outside hitter Kendra Barry (Lakeville, MA) buried 16 kills and totaled 9 digs. Both Ferreira and Barry were named to the All-Tournament Team. Junior outside hitter Jen Walsh (West Springfield, MA) and sophomore libero Amanda Machado (Swansea, MA) combined for 14 digs, while junior middle hitters Meagan McGivern (Merrimack, NH) and Ashley O'Neill (Tyngsboro, MA) combined for an amazing 13 blocks in the win.

With this win, the Saints extended their win streak to 17-straight wins and improved their record to 21-10. Emmanuel earned its third straight GNAC Championship and will advance to the NCAA Tournament for the third straight year. The Saints will play in the New England Regionals on Thursday (11/9). The Saints' opponent and the time of their match have not yet been determined.



Emmanuel Edges JWU; Saints Advance to GNAC Finals

November 2, 2006 - The Emmanuel Women's Volleyball Team defeated Johnson & Wales University in the semifinals of the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Tournament on Thursday night. The Saints edged the Wildcats in a 5-game nail-biter in front of a packed house in the Jean Yawkey Center. After winning the first game, 30-23, Emmanuel lost the second game, 29-31. The Saints rebounded to take the third game, 33-31, but lost the fourth, 28-30. The fifth and deciding game went to the Saints, 15-11. With this win, the Saints advance to the GNAC Championship. Top-seeded Emmanuel will host the 2nd seeded Raiders of Rivier College on Saturday (11/4) at 1:00 pm. This is Emmanuel's 4th-straight trip to the GNAC finals. A win on Saturday gives the Saints an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

The Saints were paced by the offense of sophomore outside hitter Lindsey Parker (New Bedford, MA). Parker slammed down 25 kills and tallied 18 digs. Senior playmaker Beth Ferreira (Somerset, MA) dished out 53 assists and collected 22 digs. Senior outside hitter Kendra Barry (Lakeville, MA) totaled 17 digs and16 kills, while freshman middle hitter Diana Grimaldi (Sandy Hook, CT) chipped in with 12 kills in the win. The defensive combination of Amanda Machado (Swansea, MA) in the back row and Meagan McGivern (Merrimack, NH) at the net helped the Saints gather 13 digs and 3 blocks. Emmanuel improved to 20-10 on the season, heading into Saturday's championship match.
