Saints Shut Out Eagles
September 25, 2006 - The Men's Soccer Team improved its record to 4-1-1 with a win over Daniel Webster College on Saturday night. The Saints held the Eagles scoreless, defeating them 3-0. Senior goalkeeper Dan Campagna (Somers, CT) made 9 saves in net for the Saints. This was Campagna's 3rd win and 2nd shutout of the season. Junior forward Chris Clark (Cohasset, MA) led the Saints with 1 goal and 2 assists in the win. Junior forward Marko Nichols-Marcy (Red Hook, NY) and freshman forward Dan D'Amato (Huntington, MA) also netted goals, while junior defender Zach Fallon (Hope Valley, RI) picked up his first assist of the season. The Saints will play again when they host the Pequots of Mitchell College on Tuesday (9/26) night at 8:00 pm.
The Women's Soccer Team rolled past Rivier College on Saturday. The Saints defeated the Raiders, 6-1. Sophomore forward Brittany Edelson (Sumpter, SC) recorded her first collegiate hat-trick, coming off the bench to score 3 goals and lead the Saints to the win. Erin Kelly (Springfield, MA), Kate McKenna (Holyoke, MA), and Nicole Davis (Bridgton, ME) also netted goals for the Saints, while Catherine Bruno (Belmont, MA) along with Kelly and McKenna recorded assists. Emmanuel held Rivier scoreless until the 85th minute of the game. The Saints will host the Munks of St. Joseph's College on Monday night (9/25) at 7:30 pm. The Munks are currently 3-2 overall. Last year, they defeated the Saints, 6-5, in Standish, ME. Emmanuel is back in action on Wednesday, when the Saints travel to Mount Ida College for a 3:30 pm start.
The Men's and Women's Cross Country Teams competed in the Pop Crowell Invitational Meet at Gordon College on Saturday. The women's team placed 6th out of 23 teams, while the men's team placed 15th. Several individuals turned in very solid performances. The Saints were led by sophomore Christine Gaspar's (Attleboro, MA) 13th place finish overall. Rookie junior Emily McCaffrey (East Greenwich, RI) placed 2nd for Emmanuel and 25th overall, lowering her personal best time to 21:24. Senior Dorothy Shanahan (Accord, NY) and freshman Amanda Strout (East Longmeadow, MA) ran very strong races, finishing in the 3rd and 4th spots for the Saints. Junior Lisa Shubert (West Boylston, MA) rounded out the scoring for Emmanuel. The men's team competed without their \#2 and \#3 runners. Senior Carlos Escobar (Cambridge, MA) led the way with his 29th place finish out of 204 runners. Junior Matt Hickey (North Attleboro, MA) ran his personal best time (30:52) and placed 2nd for Emmanuel. Senior Patrick Chviruk (Worcester, MA), freshman Tim Flaherty (Mattapoisett, MA), and freshman Joey Rugo (Grafton, MA) rounded out the top five for the Saints. The two teams will compete again on Friday (9/29) in Nashua, NH at the Rivier College Invitational Meet. Former Emmanuel Cross Country and Track star Betsy Suda (Newburyport, MA) won the 29th Annual Clarence Demar Marathon in Keene, New Hampshire on Sunday. Suda's official time was 3:16:10 and she ran at a 7:29 mile pace. Congratulations, Betsy!!!
Women's Tennis Off to Strong Start
September 19, 2006 - The Women's Tennis Team continued its unbeaten streak this week, knocking off Saint Joseph College on Sunday and Curry College on Monday. On Sunday, the Saints defeated the Blue Jays, 9-0, in the opening match of Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play. Emmanuel followed up that performance with a 7-2 win over Curry College the next day. Junior Anna Marie Podnecky (Bridgewater Corners, VT) defeated her \#1 singles opponent in straight sets (6-2, 6-3). She then teamed up with freshman Lauren Donnelly (Centerville, MA) to grab a win at \#1 doubles (8-6). Donnelly was also victorious at \#3 singles (6-2, 6-1). Sophomore Rachel Strauss (Westwood, MA) took care of her \#2 singles opponent in straight sets (6-3, 6-0). Junior Megan Barrows (West Springfield, MA) and freshman Norey Hayes (Newport, RI) defeated their \#5 and \#6 singles opponents, respectively. The Saints' 7th point of the match came by way of a win at \#2 doubles featuring Hayes along with junior Cat Robinson (East Providence, RI). The Saints are now 5-0 heading into Wednesday (9/20) afternoon's GNAC match with Simmons College. This match will be played at the Winsor School Tennis Courts and will begin at 4:00 pm.
On Monday, the Men's Soccer Team ended a non-conference battle with Newbury College in a tie. The Saints led the Nighthawks, 1-0, until the 86th minute of play, when Newbury's Evan Hudson scored assisted by John Mawson. After two overtimes, the match ended knotted at one. The Saints' lone goal came early in the game on a cross by sophomore midfielder Cameron O'Hala (Bristol, CT), which was knocked in by a Newbury defender. Senior goalkeeper Dan Campagna (Somers, CT) tallied 10 saves in net for the Saints. Emmanuel will play again on Wednesday (9/20), when the Saints travel to Becker College for a 3:30 pm start.
The Men's and Women's Cross Country Teams did not compete this past weekend. The Saints are back in action this Saturday (9/23) at the Gordon College Invitational. Congratulations to Head Cross Country and Track & Field Coach Tony DaRocha (Roxbury, MA) for placing first in the 3rd Annual Brian Honan 5K in Brighton on Sunday. DaRocha completed the road race in 17:28.
Saints Top Blue Jays in Double-Overtime
September 18, 2006 - The Women's Soccer Team edged Saint Joseph College, 3-2, on Saturday in a double-overtime thriller. The Blue Jays struck first with a goal just 10 minutes into play, but the Saints retaliated, tying the game at one on a penalty kick goal by freshman Kate McKenna (Holyoke, MA). Saint Joseph scored its second goal of the afternoon just two minutes into the 2nd half. Emmanuel tied it up again with a goal by senior captain Myheka Roper (Sunderland, VT) at 79:53. The game entered overtime tied at two, but McKenna hit the game winner in the 102nd minute. McKenna was assisted by junior midfielder Erin Kelly (Springfield, MA). The Saints' defense held the Blue Jays to 10 shots on the day. Emmanuel goalkeeper Meaghan Mingo (Grey, ME) made 7 saves in net for the Saints. The Saints are now 2-3 on the season and 1-0 in the GNAC. Emmanuel will play again on Wednesday (9/20), when the Saints travel to Pine Manor College to take on the Gators in a 4:00 start.
The Women's Volleyball Team rolled past Emerson College on Saturday in the opening conference match. The Saints defeated the Lions in three games, 30-20, 30-17, and 30-27. Sophomore outside hitter Lindsey Parker (New Bedford, MA) led the way with 15 kills, 6 digs, and 2 blocks. Senior outside hitter Kendra Barry (Lakeville, MA) knocked down 10 kills and tallied 5 digs. Senior setter Beth Ferreira (Somerset, MA) dished out 19 assists and recorded 10 digs. Freshman Diana Grimaldi (Sandy Hook, CT) and junior Meagan McGivern (Merrimack, NH) combined for 5 assisted blocks and 2 solo blocks on the day. With this win, the Saints improved their record to 2-2 overall and 1-0 in the GNAC. Emmanuel will travel to West Hartford, CT to take on the Blue Jays of Saint Joseph College on Wednesday night (9/20) at 7:00 pm.
Women's Cross Country Team Wins Massachusetts Maritime Invitational
September 11, 2006 - The Men's and Women's Cross Country Teams faired extremely well on Saturday at the Massachusetts Maritime Invitational Meet. The Women's Team was victorious, finishing first out of eight teams. Sophomore sensation Christine Gaspar (Attleboro, MA) placed first for Emmanuel and second overall, running the 5K in 20:35. Rookie junior Emily McCaffrey (East Greenwich, RI) came in 2nd for the Saints and 6th overall with her time of 21:53. Freshman Amanda Strout (East Longmeadow, MA), senior Karis Yusavitz (Philadelphia, PA), and sophomore Anna Merrow were the other top-five finishers for the Saints. The Men's Team came in second, led by senior captain Carlos Escobar (Cambridge, MA). Escobar ran the 5 mile race in 28:56, placing 5th overall. Junior T.J. Griffis (Green Harbor, MA) finished 2nd for Emmanuel and 10th overall with a time of 30:36. Junior Matt Hickey (North Attleboro, MA), senior Patrick Chviruk (Worcester, MA), and Freshman Joseph Rugo (Grafton, MA) rounded out the top five for Emmanuel. She then teamed up with partner, Lauren Donnelly (Centerville, MA), to win at \#1 doubles, 8-2. Junior Cat Robinson (East Providence, RI) was victorious at \#3 singles (6-0, 6-0), while junior captain Jamie Kenyon (Ware, MA) took the win at \#4 singles (7-5, 6-2). Juniors Megan Barrows (West Springfield, MA) and Katie Silva (Lakeville, MA) posted straight set wins at \#5 and \#6 singles, respectively. Robinson, along with doubles partner Rachel Strauss (Westwood, MA), gave the Saints their 7th point with an 8-3 win. The 8th point of the day came by way of an 8-4 win at \#3 doubles, featuring Barrows and freshman Caitrin Dunn (Toms River, NJ). The 1-0 Saints traveled to Newport, RI on Saturday to play in Salve Regina's Women's Grass Court Doubles Tournament. Emmanuel placed 4th out of eight teams. The Saints will play in their home opener tonight (9/11), as they host Newbury College at 6:30 pm.
The Women's Soccer Team picked up its first win of the season last Monday, defeating Wentworth Institute of Technology, 3-1. Freshman forward Brittany Edelson (Sumpter, SC) knocked in Emmanuel's first goal, assisted by freshman forward Stephanie Levesque (Auburn, MA) at 34:04. The Leopards netted the tying goal at 72:14, but Emmanuel struck again at 84:52, when senior forward Catherine Bruno (Belmont, MA) scored, assisted by senior forward Myheka Roper (Sunderland, VT). Junior midfielder Caitlin Egan (Milford, MA) capped off the win for the Saints with her unassisted goal in the 89th minute. Sophomore goalkeeper Laureyn Furtney (Barrington, NH) made 10 saves in her collegiate debut. The Saints were defeated by Curry College on Thursday night, 3-1. Emmanuel (1-2) will play again on Thursday (9/14) at Babson College at 4:00 pm.
The Men's Soccer Team stands undefeated at 2-0 after capturing a win over Eastern Nazarene College on Tuesday night. The Saints rolled to a 2-0 victory over the Crusaders, behind goals by freshman Mike Evans (Yarmouth, ME) and junior Jeff Thornton (Granby, CT). Evans was assisted by junior forward Chris Clark (Cohasset, MA) and Thornton scored unassisted. Senior goalkeeper Dan Campagna (Somers, CT) picked up the win for the Saints, making 4 saves in net. The 2-0 Saints will host the Golden Bears of Western New England College this Thursday night (9/14) at 8:00 pm in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference season opener.
The Women's Volleyball Team fell to Keene State College on Thursday night in the season opener. The Saints were defeated by the Owls in three games, 28-30, 27-30, and 29-31. Emmanuel, playing without senior captain Beth Ferreira (Somerset, MA), had two players share time at her setting position. Seniors Kendra Barry (Lakeville, MA) and Amy Miklus (Burton, OH) combined for 31 assists, 20 digs, and 14 kills. Junior middle hitter Meagan McGivern (Merrimack, NH) returned from last season's knee injury to tally a match-high 5 blocks and 4 kills on 5 attempts. Sophomore outside hitter Lindsey Parker (New Bedford, MA) knocked down 8 kills, while sophomore libero Amanda Machado (Swansea, MA) totaled 18 digs in the loss. The Saints will travel to Brandeis University on Tuesday (9/12) to take on the Judges in a 7:00 pm start.
Saints Down Mustangs in Season Opener
September 2, 2006 - The Men's Soccer Team defeated Mount Ida College on Saturday night in the season opener for both teams. The Saints edged the defending North Atlantic Conference champions, 2-1, at Boston English High School. This is the first time in program history that the Saints have defeated the Mustangs. Freshman forward Michael Evans (Yarmouth, ME) scored, assisted by junior forward Christopher Clark (Cohasset, MA) on a breakaway at 31:28 to give the Saints an early 1-0 lead. Emmanuel struck again in the second half as sophomore midfielder Cameron O'Hala (Bristol, CT) scored, assisted by Evans in the 66th minute. Mount Ida's lone goal came on a header off a corner kick at 75:54. Senior goalkeeper Vedran Vukovic (Chelsea, MA) made 7 saves in the 90 minutes for Emmanuel. The Saints will play again at home on Tuesday night (9/5) vs. Eastern Nazarene College at 8:00 pm.
The Women's Soccer Team fell to New England College, 2-0, in the season opener on Saturday afternoon. The two teams were scoreless for the opening thirty-five minutes. The Pilgrims netted their first goal on a shot from outside the box at 35:59. New England College scored again in the 88th minute to finish off the Saints. Senior Catherine Bruno (Belmont, MA), junior Caitlin Egan (Milford, MA), senior Myheka Roper (Sunderland, VT), and freshman Kate McKenna (Holyoke, MA) led Emmanuel's attack, combining for 14 shots on goal, but the Saints could not connect. Freshman goalkeeper Meaghan Mingo (Grey, ME) made 13 saves in net for Emmanuel. The Saints will be back in action on Monday night (9/4) at home against Wentworth at 8:00 pm.
The Men's and Women's Cross Country Teams competed in New England College's invitational meet on Saturday. Both teams finished 3rd out of eight teams. The entire women's field took a wrong turn, which resulted in them running a 2.6 mile course, as opposed to their typical 5K race. Sophomore Christine Gaspar (Attleboro, MA) placed first for Emmanuel and 11th overall with a time of 18:50. Sophomore Cathryn Lariviere (Windham NH) came in 2nd for the Saints and 16th overall with her time of 19:25. Senior Dorothy Shanahan (Accord, NY), junior Emily McCaffrey (East Greenwich, RI), and sophomore Anna Merrow (Kennebunkport, ME) rounded out the top five for Emmanuel. On the men's side, senior Carlos Escobar (Cambridge, MA) finished first for the Saints and 12th overall. He ran the 5 mile course in 30:01. Emmanuel's 2nd finisher was freshman Benjamin Mattson (Taunton, MA) with a time of 31:15. Junior T.J. Griffis (Green Harbor, MA), Senior Patrick Chviruk (Worcester, MA), and junior Matt Hickey (North Attleboro, MA) rounded out the top five for the Saints. The Saints will compete in the Massachusetts Maritime Invitational next Saturday (9/9). The women will run at 10am and the men start at 10:30 am.
