Saints Finish Strong at Brown Invitational

May 2, 2006 - The Men's and Women's Track & Field Teams competed in their last regular season meet on Sunday. The conditions were perfect for top performances and several athletes delivered. Senior Laura Mason (Palmyra, NJ) ended her career at Emmanuel the same way she started. She broke her own record in the shot put with a throw of 35'5.50". The 800m duo of freshman Cathryn Lariviere (Windham, NH) and sophomore Matt Hickey (North Attleboro, MA) lowered their school records for the third straight week. Sophomore Keelyn Blanchfield (East Thetford, VT) broke the school record in the 400m and sophomore Mike Thurnauer (Reading, MA) lowered his own record in the 400m hurdle race. Thurnauer also achieved his personal best in the long jump.

Sophomore TJ Griffis (Marshfield, MA) lowered his personal best time in the 1500m and junior Carlos Escobar (Cambridge, MA) improved on his personal best in the 800m. Sophomore Caitlin Minville (Marian, MA) continued her improvement in the 400m hurdles by lowering her time by another 2 seconds. Freshman Bryce McNamee (Grafton, MA) and sophomore Ben Kelley (Attleboro, MA) lowered their times in the 200m race. Sophomore Manfred Obisui (Worcester, MA) topped his performance from last week in the long jump, while freshman Christine Gaspar (Attleboro, MA) lowered her outdoor time in the 5000m by over 30 seconds.

Sophomore Ashley Dion (Cumberland, RI) will compete in the New England Division III Championship next Saturday (5/6) at Springfield College. For complete results of the Brown Invitational, go to coolrunning.com.

The Softball Team wrapped up the spring season last weekend in the GNAC Tournament. The Saints fell to Suffolk University on Thursday (3-0) and to Emerson College on Saturday (5-3). The Saints finished the 2006 season with an overall record of 13-25 and a GNAC record of 14-10. Junior captain Christine Sampson (Hull, MA) started at shortstop in all 38 games this season and led Emmanuel at the plate with a .402 average. Sampson's average was the 9th best in the GNAC. Senior centerfielder Megan Paszko (Haverhill, MA) finished her career at Emmanuel with a .289 batting average and a .953 fielding percentage. Senior rightfielder Katherine Palmer-Thompson (Dennis, MA) wrapped up her career, hitting .269 and totaled 14 RBIs on the season. Junior Lisa Donehey (Hull, MA) was the top Emmanuel pitcher this season with a 2.59 ERA.
