Softball Team Picks Up Three Weekend Wins

April 23, 2007 - The Emmanuel College Softball Team traveled to Nashua, NH on Saturday and swept Daniel Webster College in a GNAC double-header. Senior catcher Christine Sampson (Hull, MA) notched two hits and knocked in three runs, while junior Jen Walsh (West Springfield, MA) and freshman Erin McSheffrey (Woburn, MA) knocked in two more to lead the Saints past the Eagles, 12-3. Sophomore pitcher Ashlee Tomczak (Cambridge, MA) picked up the win. In the early game, senior pitcher Lisa Donehey (Hull, MA) threw a 5-hit shutout, striking out six batters, as the Saints won, 1-0. Emmanuel scored the lone run in the top of the third, as rookie short-stop Daniel Andruskiwec (Orange, CT) doubled in junior left-fielder Nicole Ferraro (Lakeville, MA), who had reached on an error.

On Sunday, the Saints split with conference foe, Albertus Magnus College. Emmanuel took the opener, 8-6, but lost the nightcap, 2-1. Donehey recorded the win for the Saints, giving up just two earned runs. Freshmen Sarah Palmer-Thompson (Dennis, MA) and McSheffrey led the way for Emmanuel, batting 2 for 4 in the win. Andruskiwec and Tomczak combined for 2 hits and 4 RBI, while Sampson smashed her 4th triple of the season. The Saints wrapped up the regular season at 7-25 overall and 7-15 in GNAC play. Prior to the start of Sunday's games, Emmanuel celebrated the careers of the two seniors on the team, Lisa Donehey and Christine Sampson.

The Men's and Women's Track & Field Teams competed in the MIT Spring Invitational over the weekend. Saturday's warm weather helped to improve Emmanuel's individual performances. Freshman Sarah Soldano (Bethel, CT) set a new school record in the long jump with her 15'0.75" leap. She went on to qualify for the New England Division III Championship in the high jump, as well as lower her personal best in the 100 meters with a time of 14.1. Freshman Katie Beaton (Groveland, MA) broke the school record in the 100 meters (13.76) and ran her best time in the 200 meters (28.49). Junior Brittany Bushman (Portsmouth, NH) placed 2nd in the javelin, breaking her own school record with a 120'2" toss. She also established her personal best the 400 meters (66.72). Junior Mike Thurnauer (Reading, MA) broke the school record in the javelin, as he improved on his best by over 19 feet (137'9"). Junior Emily McCaffrey (East Greenwich, RI) lowered her time in the 800 meters by four seconds. Junior Anna Marie Podnecky (Bridgewater Corners, VT), freshman Patrick Welton (Derby, CT), and freshman Brian Pecchia (Saco, ME) achieved their personal bests in the 400 meters. Freshman Ben Mattson (Taunton, MA) improved in the 400 meter and 200 meter runs. Sophomore Brian Anderson (Akron, OH) ran his fastest 200 meter time and established a personal best in the discus with a 78'2" throw. Sophomore Cathryn Lariviere (Windham, NH) established her personal best in the 5000 meters (20:11.53). Junior Megan Barrows (West Springfield, MA) and senior Dorothy Shanahan (Accord, NY) improved on their bests in the javelin. Senior Jessica Sehovich (Pelham, NH) improved in the shot put by over two feet, while freshman Junkyung Yang (Allston, MA) achieved his personal best in the long jump. The Saints will conclude the regular season next Sunday (4/29) at the Brown University Invitational. Saints Perform Well at Corsair Classic

April 17, 2007 - The Men's and Women's Track & Field Teams traveled to UMass-Dartmouth to compete in the Corsair Classic on Saturday afternoon. Although it was cold and windy, numerous team members achieved their personal bests. Junior Rob Allen (Plymouth, MA) continued his assault on the record books with a New England Division III Championship qualifying performance in the 200 meter run (22.98). Freshman Brian Pecchia (Saco, ME) added three more feet to his school record in the javelin (136'6"). Senior Brett Adell (Greene, ME) established a new school record in the hammer throw (74'7"). Freshman Sarah Soldano (Bethel, CT) established three personal bests, including a time of 14.58 in the 100 meters, a 14'5.25" long jump and a 4'9.75" high jump. Freshman Katie Beaton (Groveland, MA) also established her personal best in the 100 meters (13.91). Junior Emily McCaffrey (East Greenwich, RI) ran her fastest 800 meters of the season (2:42.46). Senior Jessica Sehovich (Pelham, NH) and freshman Doug Gillum (Boylston, MA) established their personal bests in the discus with 57'9" and 67'5" tosses, respectively. The trio of Robert Littleton (Plymouth, MA), Brian Anderson (Akron, OH) and Ryan Bringhurst (Walpole, MA) achieved their personal bests in the 100 meter and 200 meter races. Freshman Megan Reichel (Mashpee, MA) ran her personal best in the 200 meters (30.83), while freshman Ben Mattson (Taunton, MA) achieved his personal best in the javelin (113'6"). Assistant Athletic Director/Head Athletic Trainer Sue Scaffidi (Watertown, MA) successfully completed her 1st Boston Marathon yesterday. Sue's official time was 4:29.25. Congratulations, Sue!!!

The Softball Team was swept in two GNAC double-headers over the weekend. The Saints fell to Simmons College, 11-4 and 11-9, on Friday and then lost to Western New England College, 14-0 and 10-4, on Saturday. Highlights of the weekend for the Saints included a solo home run by junior right-fielder Nicole Ferraro (Lakeville, MA), her second of the season. Junior 1st baseman Stephanie Rege (Chicopee, MA) went 7 for 8 in the two games with Simmons, including hitting 5 for 5 in the nightcap. Freshman center-fielder Samantha Luther (Carlisle, MA) hit 3 for 8 vs. Simmons, while junior 3rd baseman Jen Walsh (West Springfield, MA) smashed a solo homerun in the Saints' 10-4 loss to WNEC. Sophomore pitcher Ashlee Tomczak (Cambridge, MA) struck out 7 batters over the weekend and tallied 3 hits and an RBI for Emmanuel. The Saints are currently 4-20 on the season and fell to 4-10 in the GNAC. Emmanuel will play at Pine Manor College on Thursday (4/19) in a GNAC double-header beginning at 3:00 pm.



Saints Split with Raiders

April 9, 2007 - The Emmanuel College Softball Team split on Saturday in a GNAC double-header with Rivier College. The Saints rebounded from a 9-3 loss in the early game to take a 10-8 advantage in the second game. Freshman centerfielder Samantha Luther (Carlisle, MA) was solid all day long, tallying 6 hits in 8 at-bats. Junior 1st baseman Stephanie Rege (Chicopee, MA) went 4 for 8 on the day with a 2-run homer in the bottom of the 6th to give Emmanuel the win. Sophomore designated player Ashley Tomczak (Cambridge, MA) hit 3 for 6 with a single, a double, and a triple. Senior catcher Christine Sampson (Hull, MA) went 4 for 7, with 2 RBI and 4 runs of her own. Junior rightfielder Nicole Ferraro (Lakeville, MA) smashed a solo home run in the bottom of the 3rd inning. Emmanuel is now 4-6 in GNAC play. The Saints are scheduled to host Simmons College on Friday (4/13) at 3:00 pm and Western New England College on Saturday (4/14) at 12:00 pm. Both conference double-headers will be played at Roberto Clemente Field at The Fens.

The Men's and Women's Track & Field Teams were scheduled to compete at Fitchburg State College on Saturday, but that meet was canceled due to poor field conditions. The Saints will be back in action on Saturday (4/14) at UMass Dartmouth's Corsair Invitational. The meet will begin at 11:00 am.



Softball Team Wins a Pair in Providence

April 2, 2007 - The Softball Team picked up a pair of GNAC wins on the road in Providence, RI on Friday, defeating the Wildcats of Johnson & Wales University, 3-2 and 8-5. Senior pitcher Lisa Donehey (Hull, MA) threw a 3-hitter in the early game to lead the Saints. Emmanuel's offense included singles by Christine Sampson (Hull, MA). Stephanie Rege (Chicopee, MA), Erin McSheffrey (Woburn, MA) and Danielle Andruskiwec (Orange, CT). Rookie pitcher Kiah Eilenfeldt (Davis, CA) picked up her first collegiate win in the nightcap, striking out five batters and walking just one. Freshman left-fielder Erin McSheffrey led the Emmanuel bats with 3 hits. Sampson went 2 for 4 with a double and 2 runs batted in. Senior 2nd baseman Nicole Little (Lynn, MA) went 2 for 4 with 2 RBI. Freshmen Samantha Luther (Carlisle, MA), Kristina Borrelli (Kingston, MA), and Andruskiwec chipped in with singles for the Saints. Emmanuel was defeated by Norwich University in both games of a double-header on Sunday. The Saints fell 13-2 and 8-5. Emmanuel is now 3-13 overall and 3-3 in the GNAC. The Saints will face cross-town rival Suffolk University on Friday (4/6) at Rotch Park at 3:00 pm.

The Men's Volleyball Team was defeated by Eastern Mennonite University on Friday night in the opening round of the North East Collegiate Volleyball Association (NECVA) Tournament. The Saints went down in three games, 30-19, 30-24, and 30-18. Eastern Mennonite went on to advance to the conference championship game, losing to Stevens Tech in three. Freshman outside hitter Michael Townsend (Beaverdam, VA) led the Saints with 10 kills. Senior outside hitter John Bluhm (Ventura, CA) added 6 kills and 6 digs. Freshman setter Taylor Lowe (Malibu, CA) dished out 22 assists to go along with his 6 digs and 4 kills. Senior middle blocker Trevor Blanchet (Dracut, MA) and junior opposite Brendan Ellis (Chelmsford, MA) combined for 9 kills and 3 blocks in the effort. The Saints wrapped up the season with an overall record of 14 wins and 11 losses, the second best finish in program history. Ellis set a new program record for service aces in a season with 58 this year. Lowe finished with the second highest mark for assists in a season with 1,030, while Townsend ended up in the second spot for digs in a season with 234. John Bluhm will graduate as the program's all-time leader in three categories: kills (1,081), digs (803), and aces (138).

Facing stiff competition from several NCAA Division I schools, the Saints came away with some excellent performances. Junior Brittany Bushman (Portsmouth, NH) broke the school record and qualified for the ECAC Championship in the javelin with her 4th place finish (116'5"). Sophomore Christine Gaspar (Attleboro, MA) finished 1st in the 10k with a New England Division III Championship qualifying time (41:39.52). Sophomore Cathryn Lariviere (Windham, NH) lowered her school record time in the 1500 meters to 5:17.88. Junior Rob Allen (Plymouth, MA) improved on his school record performance in the 200 meters with a time of 23.21. Freshman Brian Pecchia (Saco, ME) broke the school record in the javelin. Freshmen Kevin Ly (Portland, ME), Robert Littleton (Plymouth, MA) and Sarah Soldano improved on their personal bests in the 100 meters. Freshman Doug Gillum (Boylston, MA) improved his time in the 400 meter hurdles by over 2 seconds (67.52). Junior Ryan Bringhurst (Walpole, MA) lowered his time in the 200 meters (28.76), while junior Mike Thurnauer (Reading, MA) and freshman Patrick Welton (Derby, CT) broke their personal records in the long jump. The Saints will travel to Fitchburg State College on Saturday (4/7) to compete in the Jim Sheehan Memorial Track & Field Invitational.
