Men's Volleyball Upsets Endicott; Softball Team Defeats Framingham State; Outdoor Track Sets School Records

March 31, 2003 - The Men's Volleyball Team upset Endicott College on Thursday night, 3 games to 1. The game scores were: 31-29, 27-30, 32-30, and 30-27. The Saints were led by Freshman Hitter Stephen Yates (22 kills, 9 digs, and 6 blocks), Sophomore Hitter Michael Mazur (15 kills, 8 digs, and 4 blocks), and Freshman Setter Brian Forsman (59 assists). Emmanuel finished up conference play on Saturday, losing a tough match to Johnson & Wales University, 3 games to 1. The game scores were: 27-30, 28-30, 30-24, and 15-30. The Saints were led by Stephen Yates (18 kills and 10 digs), Freshman Hitter Patrick Bemis (15 kills and 6 digs), and Michael Mazur (13 kills and 4 blocks). Emmanuel is now 11-5 in the NECVA New England and 12-7 overall. The Saints play their last regular season match tonight (3/31) at Roger Williams University at 8:00 pm.

The Softball Team defeated Framingham State College last Wednesday, 5-3. The Saints were led by Junior 1st Baseman Katie Foley. She hit 2 for 2 with a home run, a single, and 2 RBIs. Junior Short-stop Tara Stanford went 2 for 3, while Sophomore Erin Woodbury and Freshmen Alexis Lawrence and Katherine Palmer-Thompson each had an RBI. Alexis Lawrence pitched all 7 innings, facing 28 batters and striking out 6 for the Saints. Emmanuel plays again tomorrow (4/1) at home in a GNAC double-header with Rivier College (weather permitting). The games are scheduled to begin at 2:00 pm.

The Men's and Women's Track & Field Team competed in the Bridgewater State College Invitational on Saturday. The Saints kicked of their 1st official outdoor track season with record breaking performances in less than ideal conditions. With rain and 20mph winds to contend with, the Saints gave a hint of things to come when the weather improves. The day began with Sophomore Elise Grant setting a new record in the javelin, with a throw of 67'6". That was closely followed by Sophomore Lindsay Hann's throw of 66'8". Freshman Liz Weaver finished 2nd in the 100m hurdles with a new record of 18.86. Freshman Ashley Nigro had a busy day competing in 4 events. She finished 4th in the 100m and 6th in the shot put. She was also a member of the record setting 4 x 100m relay team along with Junior Kellie Folsom, Lindsay Hann and Liz Weaver. Their team finished 2nd. Freshman Laura Mason established two new school records with her 93'0" throw in the discus and her 28'1" throw in the shot put. She finished 2nd and 4th respectively in those events. Sophomores Stacey Vassell-Johnson and Elizabeth Cruz ran the 200m, while Sophomore Shanna Villanueva and Freshman Rebecca Cowen ran the 1500m.

The men's team was led by Sophomore Keven James' new record in the 400m (52.75). After finishing 3rd in this event, he came back to finish 2nd in the 200m. Finishing right behind him in both events was Sophomore Captain Serghino Rene. These two were joined by Junior Shigeru Nishimura and Sophomore Derrick Trotman on the 2nd place 4 x 400m relay team. Sophomores Terrence Welch and Albert Hayle ran in the 400m race, while Sophomore Will Laguerre competed in the 100m race. Sophomore Scott Holmes ran his first race in several months after recovering from an injury. The Saints will travel to Fitchburg, MA next Saturday (4/5) to compete in the Fitchburg State College Invitational.

Outdoor Track Team in First Meet of Season

March 25, 2003 - The Men's Volleyball Team defeated Lasell College last night, 3 games to 0. The game scores were: 30-13, 30-20, and 30-19. The Saints were led by Sophomore Hitter Warren Bowman. He had 12 kills in 13 total attempts, with only 1 error, hitting .846. Freshman Patrick Bemis (11 kills & 5 digs), along with Sophomores Dan McNeil (10 kills & 5 blocks) and Michael Mazur (6 kills & 7 digs) hit over .500 as well. Freshman Setter Brian Forsman had 35 assists in the match. Emmanuel is now 11-6 overall and 10-4 in the NECVA New England. The Saints play again at home on Thursday night (3/27) vs. Endicott College at 8:00 pm.

The Softball Team competed in the annual Colleges of The Fenway Tournament on Sunday. The Saints were defeated by Simmons College, 6-5. Emmanuel was led by Sophomore Catcher Erin Woodbury. She went 2 for 3, with a homerun, a single, and an RBI. Sophomore Outfielder Venus Corriveau had 2 singles and 2 RBIs, while Junior 1st Baseman Katie Foley chipped in with a single, an RBI, and 3 put-outs for Emmanuel. The Saints play their first home game tomorrow (3/26) vs. Framingham State College at 4pm. This game will be played at the Wentworth Softball Field. All other home games will be played at Roberto Clemente Field (The Fens).

The Men's and Women's Track & Field Team will compete in the Bridgewater State College Invitational Meet on Saturday (3/29) at 10:00 am. This is the first meet of their season.

Men's Volleyball Team Defeats Elms College

March 19, 2003 - The Men's Volleyball Team defeated Elms College last night, 3 games to 0. The game scores were: 30-19, 30-18, and 30-17. The Saints were led by Sophomore Captain Michael Mazur (14 digs, 10 kills, 4 blocks, & 3 service aces), Freshman Captain Pat Bemis (9 assists, 8 kills, & 8 digs), and Freshman Captain Stephen Yates (8 digs, 7 kills, & 4 service aces). Sophomore Warren Bowman chipped in with 7 kills and Freshman Brian Forsman had 21 assists in the match. Emmanuel is now 8-3 in the NECVA New England and 9-5 overall. Tonight, the Saints face the Raiders from Rivier College. Rivier is undefeated in the conference and ranked 1st in the NECVA New England. The match will be played at 8:00 pm in the Holmes Sports Center at Simmons College.

The Softball Team will play this Sunday (3/23) in the Colleges of The Fenway Tournament. The games will be played at the softball field at Wentworth Institute of Technology.

If you were unable to attend the Women's Basketball Team's NCAA Tournament game vs. Salve Regina University, it will be televised on Comcast in the city of Boston (channel A23) on Sunday (3/23) at 10:00 am.

Men's Volleyball to Play First Home Game

March 17, 2003 - The Emmanuel Men's Volleyball Team will play their first-ever home match tomorrow night (3/18) against Elms College at 7:30 pm. All home matches are played at the Holmes Sports Center at Simmons College. The Saints are currently 8-5 overall and 7-3 in the (North East Collegiate Volleyball Association) NECVA. They are also ranked 3rd in the New England Division of the NECVA.

The Softball Team returned from spring training in Fort Meyers, Florida with a 1-7 record. The Saints faced several nationally-ranked teams. Three of their losses were decided by only 1 run. Emmanuel defeated U.S. Merchant Marine, 9-1. Junior Katie Foley went 4 for 4 and scored 3 runs. Senior Katie Baribeault went 3 for 4, with 2 RBIs. Senior Pitcher Carrie Rodman had 3 strike-outs in the win. Emmanuel's game vs. Salem State College, originally scheduled for this Thursday, has been postponed. The Saints will play in the Colleges of The Fenway Tournament this Sunday (3/23) @ Wentworth Institute of Technology. Emmanuel's first home game is on Wednesday (3/26) vs. Framingham State College at 3:30 pm. Home games are played at Roberto Clemente Field at The Fens.

Congratulations to Emmanuel Senior Julia Demirer for being named the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Year and to Freshman Evita Esteves for being named the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Rookie of the Year.

Women's Basketball Defeated by Bowdoin

March 10, 2003 - On Saturday, the Women's Basketball Team was defeated by Bowdoin College, 73-50, in the 2nd round of the NCAA Tournament. The Saints were led by Senior Forward Julia Demirer (20 points & 9 rebounds). Emmanuel finished the season with an overall record of 26-4. The Saints now have a 3-year record of 81-11 and a 3-year conference record of 45-0. Julia Demirer finished her career at Emmanuel with a total of 1,387 points (4th on the school's all-time scoring list) and 848 rebounds.

The Men's Volleyball Team currently holds 3rd place in the North East Collegiate Volleyball Association's (NECVA) New England Division. Emmanuel is 7-3 in the conference and 8-5 overall. Last week, the Saints defeated Newbury College, 3 games to 0. They were led by Sophomore Captain Michael Mazur (13 kills, 6 digs, and 3 blocks. Mazur currently leads the team in hitting (.379) and averages 3.70 kills per game. He was recently named the NECVA Player of the Week for his performance in the Saints' 3-2 loss to Johnson & Wales. Freshman Setter Brian Forsman leads Emmanuel in assists, averaging 9.89 per game, while Freshman Captain Stephen Yates is tops in digs, averaging 2.63 per game. The Saints return to action on Tuesday, March 18th in their first-ever home match. They will take on Elms College at 7:30 pm in the Holmes Sports Center at Simmons College.

The Emmanuel Softball Team is currently in Fort Meyers, Florida where they will play eight games before returning on March 15th. The first home softball game is on Wednesday, March 26th vs. Framingham State College. The game begins at 3:30 pm. All home softball games are played at Roberto Clemente Field at The Fens.

Women's Basketball Team Advances

March 6, 2003 - On Wednesday night, the Women's Basketball Team defeated Salve Regina University, 69-52, in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Emmanuel came back from a 9 point half-time deficit, paced by Senior Forward Julia Demirer's 21 points and game-high 15 rebounds. Junior Guard Chrissy Pagano scored a season-high 15 points (including 3 three-pointers), while Sophomore Forward Paulette Johnson and Freshman Forward Alyssa McCoy each chipped in 9 points to help lift the Saints. Mid-way through the 2nd half, Emmanuel went on an 11-0 run and never looked back. The Saints' defense held the Seahawks scoreless for over six minutes in the 2nd half. Emmanuel now advances to the 2nd round of the national tournament. The Saints will travel to Brunswick, Maine for an NCAA Tournament re-match with top seeded Bowdoin College on Saturday at 3:00 pm.

There will be a free bus trip to the Women's Basketball Game on Saturday. The bus will leave at 11:30 am and will return by 8:00 pm. The game is at Bowdoin College at 3:30 pm. PLEASE COME SUPPORT THE SAINTS!!!

Saints Win 3rd Straight GNAC Title; Advance to NCAA Tourney

March 3, 2003 - On Saturday afternoon, the Women's Basketball Team defeated Western New England College, 65-41, in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Championship. This was the Saints' 3rd straight conference championship. Emmanuel has now won 20 consecutive games and maintains the longest winning streak in New England. The Saints have also won 45 straight GNAC games.

Senior Forward Julia Demirer was named the GNAC Tournament's Most Valuable Player. Senior Guard Katie Corey and Freshman Point Guard Evita Esteves were named to the All-Tournament Team.

Emmanuel will host the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Wednesday night (3/5). The Saints (25-3) will face the Seahawks (25-3) from Salve Regina University at The Holmes Sports Center (Simmons) at 7:30 pm.
