Women's Hoop Ranked 20th Nationally

January 30, 2007 - The Women's Basketball Team moved up to 20th in this week's D3hoops.com national poll. The Saints eased past cross-town rival Suffolk University, 63-41, in conference action on Monday night. Emmanuel improved to 16-1 overall and remains undefeated at 5-0 in the GNAC. Junior guard Jacquelyn Pannell (Bloomfield, CT) paced the Saints with 14 points on 7 for 11 shooting. Freshman forward Tommia Davis (Gloucester, MA) played solidly once again, scoring 12 points, grabbing 10 rebounds, dishing out 7 assists, and tallying 6 steals. Performances like this over the past several games helped Davis earn Great Northeast Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week honors for the second straight week. Senior forward Katie Gallant (Quaker Hill, CT) shot 4 for 6 from the field and scored 10 points for Emmanuel. The Saints will travel to Providence, RI on Wednesday night (1/31) to challenge the Wildcats of Johnson & Wales University in a 5:30 pm start.

The Men's Basketball Team cruised past Daniel Webster College on Monday night, 83-61. Junior center Levi Smith (Tulsa, OK) led the way with 19 points and a game-high 15 rebounds. Freshman guard Zach Luster (Provincetown, MA) scored 17 points, shooting 6 for 8 from the floor. Sophomore forward Mack Spellman (Clinton, NY) added 16 points and 4 steals, while sophomore guard Rob Williams-Hinton (Oak Park, MI) netted 11 points, to go along with his 7 assists, and 4 steals. Junior forward Brian Lindsey (New Orleans, LA) added 12 rebounds and 5 assists in the win. Emmanuel is now 7-11 overall and 6-4 in the conference. The Saints will play again at Johnson & Wales University on Wednesday night (1/31) at 7:30 pm.



Saints Sweep Lynx

January 29, 2007 - The Men's Volleyball Team was victorious in the team's home opener. The Saints defeated Lesley University in 3 games, 30-12, 30-18, and 30-23. Outside hitters John Bluhm (Ventura, CA) and Michael Townsend (Beaverdam, VA) led the way with 11 kills apiece. Bluhm also recorded a team-high 5 service aces, while Townsend tallied 6 digs in the win. Emmanuel's freshman setter Taylor Lowe (Malibu, CA) dished out 40 assists. Junior hitter Brendan Ellis (Chelmsford, MA) notched 10 kills in the match. The Saints improved to 1-4 overall. Emmanuel will play at Elms College in Chicopee, MA on Tuesday (1/30) at 7:00 pm.

The Men's and Women's Indoor Track & Field Teams competed at the University of Southern Maine Invitational Meet on Saturday. For Emmanuel, sophomore Cathryn Lariviere (Windham, NH) broke her school record in the mile with a time of 5:47.40. Junior Rob Allen (Plymouth, MA) tied his school record in the 55m with a time of 6.89. Freshmen Mark Proto (West Haven, CT) and Brian Pecchia (Saco, ME) ran their personal bests in the 55m. Junior Mike Thurnauer (Reading, MA) and freshman Patrick Welton (Derby, CT) set personal best times in the 400m. Freshmen Ben Mattson (Taunton, MA) and Rustam Allakhverdiyev (Kazakhstan) established their personal bests in the 600m. Senior Brett Adell (Greene, ME) improved on his best in the weight throw with a 27'8.5" hurl, while sophomore Philip Meagher (Amherst, MA) improved in the shot put by over 2 feet. The Saints are off this week, but will compete again on February 10th at the Wesleyan University Invitational.

The Women's Basketball Team rolled to a 79-44 win over Saint Joseph College on Saturday. The Saints improved to 15-1 on the season and 4-0 in the GNAC, while the Blue Jays fell to 5-13 overall and 2-4 in the conference. Emmanuel's defense forced 38 Saint Joseph turnovers. Freshman forward Tommia Davis (Gloucester, MA) led the way for Emmanuel, tying her career-high of 18 points and pulling down 6 rebounds. Junior guard Brittany Bushman (Portsmouth, NH) scored 13 points, including 3 three-pointers. Junior forward Sara Long (Oakland, NJ) netted 11 points, and was perfect from the floor hitting 5 for 5 attempts. Long also grabbed 7 boards in the win. Freshman guard Iman Davis (New Britain, CT) dished out a game-high 7 assists. The Saints will be back in action on Monday night (1/29), when they host the Rams of Suffolk University at 7:30 pm.

The Men's Basketball Team was defeated by conference rival Emerson College on Saturday, 84-76. The Saints played the Lions evenly for most of the game. Emmanuel shot 27 of 57 vs. Emerson's 26 of 56. The Saints and the Lions each recorded 35 rebounds for the game. The big difference in the contest came from the foul line. Emerson connected on 26 of 32 attempts, while Emmanuel hit 16 of just 23 attempts. The Saints were led by sophomore forward Mack Spellman (Clinton, NY), who hit scored 22 points (7-13) and pulled down 13 rebounds. Junior center Levi Smith (Tulsa, OK) played a solid game, scoring 16 points, to go along with his 6 rebounds, 5 assists, and 5 blocked shots. Sophomore guard Rob Williams-Hinton (Oak Park, MI) netted 17 points and dished out 6 assists in the effort. The Saints fell to 6-11 overall and 5-3 in the GNAC. Emmanuel will be back in action on Monday night (1/29), when the Saints host the Eagles of Daniel Webster College at 5:30 pm.



Saints Come Up Short Against Golden Bears

January 25, 2007 - The Men's Basketball Team was overpowered by Western New England College on Thursday night, 71-67. The Saints played without starters Brian Lindsey and Mike Jackson. Emmanuel was out-rebounded 40-29. Junior center Levi Smith (Tulsa, OK) led the way for the Saints, notching a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Sophomore forward Mack Spellman (Clinton, NY) hit for 15 points, while sophomore guard Rob Williams-Hinton (Oak Park, MI) netted 14 points. Junior guard John Leonard (Boston, MA) tied his career-high with 10 points, while dishing out 4 assists. Western New England got 21 of their 71 points off of free throws. The Golden Bears held a solid 10-point lead for the majority of the game, but Emmanuel came back in the final two minutes. The Saints cut the lead to six points on a three-pointer by Williams-Hinton, but were unable to close the gap down the stretch. Emmanuel fell to 6-10 overall and 5-3 in the GNAC, while WNEC improved to 11-7, 8-2 GNAC. The Saints will play on the road this Saturday (1/27) at Emerson College in a 1:00 pm start.

The Men's Volleyball Team lost its North East Collegiate Volleyball Association (NECVA) opener in three games to MIT on Thursday night, 30-21, 30-20, 30-23. The Saints were led by freshman hitter Michael Townsend (Beaverdam, VA), who notched 10 kills and 7 digs. Junior hitter Brendan Ellis (Chelmsford, MA) registered 7 kills, while freshman setter Taylor Lowe (Malibu, CA) dished out 28 helpers. The Saints will host Lesley University in their home opener this Saturday (1/27) at 5:00 pm.



Saints Shut Down WNEC

January 24, 2007 - The Emmanuel College Women's Basketball Team shut down Western New England College, 82-67, on Tuesday night in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference match up. Emmanuel tallied 21 steals in the game and the Saints' defensive pressure forced 32 WNEC turnovers. The Saints out-rebounded the Golden Bears 46-24. Junior guard Jade Paez (Bronx, NY) led four Saints in double figures with 18 points. Paez also dished out 7 assists and grabbed 6 rebounds. Freshman forward Tommia Davis (Gloucester, MA) netted 17 points to go along with her 8 rebounds, 5 assists, and 5 steals. Junior guard Brittany Bushman (Portsmouth, NH) came off the bench to provide 13 points. Freshman guard Iman Davis (New Britain, CT) added 10 points, 6 assists, and 6 steals. Senior forward LaTeisha Johnson (Dorchester, MA) chipped in with 9 points and 7 boards. The Saints shot 45% from the floor (33 for 73) and scored 40 of their points off WNEC turnovers. Emmanuel improved to 14-1 on the season and the Saints remain undefeated in the GNAC (3-0). The Saints were ranked 23rd in this week's D3hoops.com national poll. Congratulations to Emmanuel's Tommia Davis for being named the Great Northeast Athletic Conference's Rookie of the Week. Emmanuel will play again on Saturday (1/27), when the Saints host the Blue Jays of Saint Joseph College (CT) at 1:00 pm.

The Men's Volleyball Team fell to Johnson & Wales University on Tuesday night in 3 games. The game scores were: 30-23, 30-25, and 30-28. Freshman hitter Michael Townsend (Beaverdam, VA) led Emmanuel with 17 kills, hitting 31.4% for the match. Senior hitter John Bluhm (Ventura, CA) notched 9 kills and 8 digs, while freshman setter Taylor Lowe (Malibu, CA) dished out 40 assists and tallied 6 digs in the match. Junior middle-hitter Sophanna Lout (Boston, MA) recorded a team-high 10 digs and junior hitter Brendan Ellis (Chelmsford, MA) knocked in 7 kills in the effort. The Saints will be looking for their first win of the season on Thursday night (1/25) when they travel to MIT to take on the Engineers at 7:00 pm. Emmanuel will play in its home opener on Saturday (1/27), when the Saints host the Lynx of Lesley University at 5:00 pm.

The Men's Basketball Team was defeated by Bates College on Tuesday night, 75-57, in non-conference action. Bates improved to 15-2 on the season, while Emmanuel fell to 6-9. The Bobcats out-rebounded the Saints by a 45-35 margin. Saints' sophomore Mack Spellman (Clinton, NY) scored a game-high 18 points, hitting 7 of 13 attempts from the floor. Spellman was also named the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Player of the Week for his performances in last week's contests. Junior center Levi Smith (Tulsa, OK) added 16 points and pulled down 6 rebounds, while sophomore guard Rob Williams-Hinton (Oak Park, MI) chipped in with 7 points and 7 rebounds in the game. The Saints are currently 5-2 in the GNAC and will host the Golden Bears of Western New England College of Thursday night (1/25) at 7:00 pm.



Hoop Teams Win Big on Saturday

January 21, 2007 - The Men's Basketball Team cruised to an 82-59 win over Albertus Magnus College on Saturday. All 12 Emmanuel players scored in the win. Sophomore forward Mack Spellman (Clinton, NY) led the way for the Saints with 17 points and 6 rebounds. Spellman shot 8 for 15 for the game and scored all 17 of his points in the 1st half of play. Junior center Levi Smith (Tulsa, OK) netted 13 points, shooting 4 for 7 from the floor and 4 for 6 from the line. Smith also blocked 4 shots in his 22 minutes of action. Junior forward Brian Lindsey (New Orleans, LA) played a solid game, tallying 10 points, 5 rebounds, and a game-high 5 assists. Junior guard John Leonard (Boston, MA) scored a career-high 10 points, dished out 4 assists, and grabbed 4 rebounds in the win. As a team, the Saints shot 48.5% from the floor (33-66) and forced 19 Falcon turnovers. The Saints are now 6-8 overall and 5-2 in the GNAC. The team will travel to Maine on Tuesday night (1/23) to take on Bates College at 7:00 pm.

The Emmanuel Women's Basketball Team was recently ranked 25th nationally in the USA Today Division III poll. The Saints knocked off Albertus Magnus College on Saturday, 64-45. Emmanuel improved to 13-1 on the season and 2-0 in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference. Emmanuel was paced by freshmen Iman Davis (New Britain, CT) and Tommia Davis (Gloucester, MA). Iman Davis posted a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds, while Tommia Davis hit for 12 points and dished out 6 assists. Junior forward Maura Mooney (Essex, VT) shot 5 for 6 from the floor for 10 points in the win. The Saints will host the Golden Bears of Western New England College on Tuesday night at 7:00 pm.

The Men's Volleyball Team was defeated by Mount Olive College in three games on Saturday night. The game scores were: 30-19, 30-17, and 31-29. Senior outside hitter John Bluhm (Ventura, CA) led the way for the Saints with 10 kills and 9 digs. Junior Brendan Ellis (Chelmsford, MA) and freshman Michael Townsend (Beaverdam, VA) tallied 8 and 7 kills, respectively, while freshman setter Taylor Lowe (Malibu, CA) piled up 28 assists in the match. The Saints will play again on Tuesday night (1/23) at Johnson & Wales University at 7:00 pm.

The Men's and Women's Indoor Track & Field Teams competed in the Reggie Poyau Invitational at Brandeis University on Saturday. The Saints competed against some of the top Division III teams in New England. Emmanuel's top performances on the women's side included: Emily McCaffrey's 4th place finish in the 1000m (3:33.46), Christine Gaspar's 2nd place finish in the 5000m (20:52.38), and Megan Reichel's 7th place finish in the high jump (1.42m). On the men's side, Rob Allen placed 6th in the 200m with a time of 23:58 and 11th in the 55m dash with a time of 6.89. Other top performances included T.J. Griffis placing 11th in the 1000m with a time of 2:44.40 and Brett Adell's 5th place shot put throw of 10.94m. The Saints will compete again on Saturday (1/27) at the University of Southern Maine Invitational at 1:00 pm.



Saints Roll Past Salem State

January 18, 2007 - The Emmanuel Women's Basketball Team cruised to a 92-71 win over Salem State College on Thursday night. The sharp-shooting Saints shot 50% from the floor (36-72) for the game. Emmanuel's balanced attack included 5 players scoring in double figures. The Saints received 50 of the team's total points from inside the paint and out-rebounded the Vikings, 50-36. Junior guard Jade Paez (Bronx, NY) led all scorers with 22 points, including 5 three-pointers, 4 assists, and 4 steals. Freshman guard Iman Davis (New Britain, CT) connected on 8 of 12 attempts from the field and totaled 20 points and 7 rebounds in the win. Freshman forward Tommia Davis (Gloucester, MA) dominated Emmanuel's inside game, netting 18 points and pulling down 12 boards. Senior forward LaTeisha Johnson (Dorchester, MA) recorded her 3rd double-double of the season with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Senior center Catherine Gallant (Quaker Hill, CT) chipped in with 10 points on 5 for 7 shooting. The Vikings were led by senior guard Katelynn Lunnin's (South Boston, MA) 17 points. Junior forward Lindsey Watkins (Wareham, MA) and freshman center Danielle Jenkins (Marlborough, MA) added 14 and 13 points, respectively. Emmanuel led by just 4 at the break, but outscored Salem by 17 points in the second half, in route to the 92-71 victory. Emmanuel is now 12-1 overall and 1-0 in the GNAC. The Saints are back in action on Saturday (1/20) at home against Albertus Magnus College at 1:00 pm.

The Men's Basketball Team fell to Salem State College on Thursday night, 68-62. The Saints held a 13-point lead over the defending MASCAC champions mid-way through the first half, but could not hold on down the stretch. The Saints out-rebounded the Vikings, 46-45. Junior center Levi Smith (Tulsa, OK) led all scorers with 21 points on 9 for 18 shooting. Smith also gathered 10 rebounds and blocked 6 shots. Sophomore forward Mack Spellman (Clinton, NY) pumped in 17 points and grabbed 9 boards, while junior forward Brian Lindsey (New Orleans, LA) hit for 11 points and pulled down 8 rebounds. Sophomore guard Rob Williams-Hinton (Oak Park, MI) dished out a game-high 5 assists. Emmanuel dropped to 5-8 on the season. The Saints are 4-2 in the GNAC after a 69-67 win over Rivier College on Wednesday night. Emmanuel will be back in action on Saturday (1/20), when the Saints host the Falcons of Albertus Magnus College in a 3:00 pm start.

The Men's Volleyball Team was defeated in its season opener on Wednesday night. The Saints fell to the Gulls of Endicott College in 4 games. The game scores were: 18-30, 28-30, 30-25, and 25-30. Freshman outside hitter Michael Townsend (Beaverdam, VA) led Emmanuel with 13 kills and 10 digs. Senior outside hitter John Bluhm (Ventura, CA) and senior middle hitter Trevor Blanchet (Dracut, MA) each totaled 11 kills, while freshman setter Taylor Lowe (Malibu, CA) dished out 48 assists in the match. Junior middle hitter Sophanna Lout (Boston, MA) recorded a team-high 15 digs to go along with his 7 kills in 15 attempts. Emmanuel will play again on Saturday (1/20), when the Saints take on Mount Olive College in a non-conference match. This match will be played at Mount Ida College at 6:00 pm.



Indoor Track & Field Teams Perform Well at Tufts

January 17, 2007 - The Men's and Women's Indoor Track and Field Teams returned to action after the winter break, competing in the Tufts University Invitational Meet on Saturday. Sophomore Cathryn Lariviere (Windham, NH) broke the school record in the mile with a time of 5:52.21. Lariviere, along with Christine Gaspar (Attleboro, MA), Samantha Scola (Medford, MA), and Emily McCaffrey (East Greenwich, RI), helped set a new school record in the 4 X 800m relay (11:34.12). The men's 4 X 200m relay team of Michael Thurnauer (Reading, MA), Robert Littleton (Plymouth, MA), Mark Proto (West Haven, CT), and Rob Allen (Plymouth, MA) also established a new school record with a time of 1:40.82.

McCaffrey, Scola, and freshman Patrick Welton (Derby, CT) achieved their personal bests in the 600m race. Junior Ryan Bringhurst (Walpole, MA) and freshman Brian Pecchia (Saco, ME) ran their personal bests in the 55m. Sophomore Sarah Vilaylak (Lynn, MA) competed in her very first collegiate track meet and in doing so moved up to the number 2 spot in Emmanuel's all-time list in the shot put with a 29'6" toss.

Balanced Attack Boosts Saints

January 13, 2007 - Junior center Levi Smith (Tulsa, OK) led five players in double figures with 20 points, 10 rebounds, and 5 blocked shots, as the Emmanuel Men's Basketball Team routed conference rival Suffolk University, 96-70, in GNAC hoop action on Saturday. The Saints rebounded from an 85-78 loss to Suffolk back in early December to defeat the Rams and improve their record in the conference to 3-2. Freshman point guard Mike Jackson (New York, NY) hit for 15 points, tallied 6 steals, and dished out 4 assists. Sophomore forward Mack Spellman (Clinton, NY) netted 15 points, including 3 three-pointers, and pulled down 4 rebounds. Rob Williams-Hinton (Oak Park, MI) and Zach Luster (Provincetown, MA) chipped in with 12 points apiece. Both guards shot 4 of 7 from the floor for the game. Luster also grabbed 7 boards in the win. The sharp-shooting Saints connected on 35 of 68 field goal attempts for 51% shooting for the game. The Saints scored 46 of their total points in the paint and 27 off the fast break. Emmanuel's defense forced 23 Suffolk turnovers and the Saints earned 29 points off those turnovers. With this win, Emmanuel improved to 4-7 overall, while the Rams fell to 3-9 and 2-2 in the GNAC. The Saints will play at home again on Monday night, when they host the defending GNAC champion Cadets of Norwich University at 7:30 pm. This game will begin following the women's basketball game between Emmanuel College and Southern Vermont College at 5:30 pm.



Saints Stop Wildcats

January 12, 2007 - The Men's Basketball Team defeated Johnson & Wales University on Thursday night, 77-71. Sophomore forward Mack Spellman (Clinton, NY) led the Saints, scoring 27 points (8 for 15 FG) and pulling down 13 rebounds. Sophomore guard Rob Williams-Hinton (Oak Park, MI) netted 20 points and dished out 3 assists, while junior forward Brian Lindsey (New Orleans, LA) and freshman forward Karl Gonzalez (San Isidro, Puerto Rico) chipped in with 10 and 8 points, respectively. Emmanuel led for most of the game, but built its largest lead early in the first half, 10 points. As a team, the Saints shot 40.7% from the floor (24 for 59) for the game, despite committing 29 fouls and 21 turnovers. With this conference win, Emmanuel improved to 3-7 overall and 2-2 in the GNAC. The Saints will be back in action on Saturday (1/13) when they host the Rams of Suffolk University at 1:00 pm.



Saints Survive Tufts

January 9, 2007 - The Emmanuel College Women's Basketball Team (10-1) outlasted Tufts University on Tuesday night, 72-64. The battle featured 9 lead changes and 6 ties. The Saints trailed by one at the break (24-23), but battled back in the second half, outscoring the Jumbos, 49-40.

Freshman guard Iman Davis (New Britain, CT) led four players scoring in double digits for the Saints. Davis hit for 15 points, grabbed 8 rebounds, dished out 3 assists, and gathered 3 steals in 31 minutes of action. Senior forward LaTeisha Johnson (Dorchester, MA) recorded a double-double with 14 points and a game-high 15 rebounds. Junior guard Jade Paez (Bronx, NY) netted 12 points, including a three-pointer with just under a minute remaining, which sealed the deal for Emmanuel. Freshman forward Tommia Davis (Gloucester, MA) chipped in with 10 points and 7 boards for the Saints.

The Jumbos were led by junior forward Khalilah Ummah (Litchfield, ME) with 21 points on 7 for 11 shooting. Junior guard Jenna Gomez (Norfolk, MA) and sophomore guard Kimberly Moynihan (West Hartford, CT) chipped in with 12 and 11 points respectively, while senior guard Taryn Miller-Stevens (Avon, CT) dished out a game-high 8 assists.

The Saints improved their record to 10-1 overall, while the Jumbos fell to 7-5 on the season. Emmanuel is back in action next Monday (1/15), when the Saints host the Mountaineers of Southern Vermont College at 5:30 pm.


NASHUA, NH - Mack Spellman (Clinton, NY) notched a double double with a game high 17 points and 10 rebounds and Brian Lindsey (New Orleans, LA) chipped in with 14 points and 10 boards to lead the Emmanuel Men's Basketball Team past host Daniel Webster College, 82-60, in a GNAC matchup on Tuesday night. Spellman notched all three of his three pointers in the first 3:43 of the game, sparking a Saints squad (2-7, 1-2 GNAC) that shot 53% from the field in the opening period to build a 45-27 halftime lead. Freshman guard Mike Jackson (New York, NY) finished with 12 points and freshman forward Karl Gonzalez (San Isidro, Puerto Rico) added 10 for the Saints.

Jamie Bryant (Hartford, CT) and Toby Jiminez (Worcester, MA) led the Eagles (3-4 / 1-2 GNAC) with 12 points each. Adam Greeno (Brandon, VT) added 11 with eight rebounds and Ray McKie (Bronx, NY) chipped in with 10 points.

Emmanuel's size overcame the Eagles' quickness, as the Saints finished with a resounding 55-33 advantage on the boards, making up for 25 team turnovers. The Saints also dominated the post and finished with a 52-36 scoring advantage in the paint. The Eagles jumped out of the gate scoring the game's first five points, but Spellman answered with two quick treys for a 6-5 lead. His third, putting the Saints up 9-7, gave Emmanuel a lead they would not relinquish the rest of the night.

With this win, the Saints improved to 2-7 overall and 1-2 in the GNAC. Emmanuel hosts Johnson & Wales University in GNAC play on Thursday night (1/11) at 7:00 pm.



Emmanuel Falls to #1 Bowdoin

January 6, 2007 - The Emmanuel College Women's Basketball Team (9-1) picked up its first loss of the season, falling to #1 Bowdoin College (11-0) on Saturday, 67-58. The Saints trailed the entire game but managed to cut Bowdoin's lead to 2 with just 58 seconds remaining. Bowdoin's largest lead came at the end of the first half, when the Polar Bears led by 14. The Polar Bears held a solid lead throughout the second half, but Emmanuel executed full court pressure defense and rallied down the stretch. The Saints cut the Polar Bear lead to four (57-53) with 3:38 remaining on a jumper by freshman forward Tommia Davis (Gloucester, MA). Davis also converted a three-point play in the final minute, which cut the lead to two (60-58). The Saints committed three fouls in the final minute of the game and Bowdoin connected on the free-throw attempts and held on for a 67-58 win.

The Polar Bears were paced by senior forward Eileen Flaherty's (Fairfield, CT) 23 points. Flaherty was perfect from the foul line (13-13) and pulled down a game-high 9 rebounds. As a team, Bowdoin shot 80% from the line (19-23). Senior guard Katie Cummings (Summit, NJ) and freshman forward Leah Rubega (Norwich, CT) each hit for 11 points for Bowdoin. Sophomore forward Jill Anelauskas (Medfield, MA) chipped in with 10 points, while senior guard Julia Loonin (New York, NY) dished out 6 assists.

The Saints were led by junior guard Jade Paez (Bronx, NY). Paez netted 19 points on 7 for 16 shooting. She also hit 5 for 6 three-point attempts in her 39 minutes of action. Tommia Davis tallied 15 points for Emmanuel, scoring 6 of those in the final two minutes of the game. Freshman guard Iman Davis (New Britain, CT) dished out a game-high 9 assists and added 8 points for the Saints.

With this loss, the Saints fall to 9-1 on the season, while the Polar Bears remain unbeaten and improve their record to 11-0. Emmanuel will play again on Tuesday (1/9), when the Saints host Tufts University at 7:00 pm in the Jean Yawkey Center.



Women's Hoop Team Remains Unbeaten

January 5, 2007 - The Women's Basketball Team returned from the winter break with two more wins. The Saints traveled to Palm Beach, Florida for two non-conference games. Emmanuel defeated Northwood University, an NAIA Division II opponent, on January 2nd and Johnson & Wales University of Florida on January 3rd. Emmanuel's win over Northwood came following a bucket scored by junior forward Maura Mooney (Essex, VT) in the closing seconds of the game. Mooney's basket clinched the 64-63 win for the Saints. Freshman guard Iman Davis (New Britain, CT) paced Emmanuel with 21 points, 4 rebounds, and 4 steals. Junior guard Jade Paez (Bronx, NY) netted 13 points to go along with her 6 rebounds and 6 steals. Mooney finished the game with 9 points on 4 for 5 shooting. After defeating Northwood University, the Saints went on to defeat Johnson & Wales University, 78-73, the following night. Emmanuel led by just 3 points at the half (33-30) and trailed by 8 with 5 minutes to go. Full-court man-to-man pressure defense helped the Saints regain the lead and Emmanuel was able to hold on for the win. Iman Davis led the way again with 19 points. Senior forward LaTeisha Johnson (Dorchester, MA) recorded a double-double with 15 points and 15 rebounds, while junior forward Erica Wenz (Bayport, NY) chipped in with 9 points in the win. The Saints improved their record to 9-0 overall. Emmanuel will play again on Saturday (1/6) when the Saints host Bowdoin College at 1:00 pm. The Polar Bears are currently undefeated at 10-0 and are ranked first in the Division III national poll.



Men's Hoop Team Captures 1st Win

January 2, 2007 - The Men's Basketball Team traveled to Palm Beach, Florida over the winter break to participate in Northwood University's Comfort Inn Seahawks Holiday Tournament. The Saints faced Northwood University in the opening round of the tournament. Northwood is a Division II member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). The Saints snapped a season-long six game losing streak, defeating the Seahawks, 56-54. Junior forward Brian Lindsey (New Orleans, LA) hit a 5-foot jumper with just 4 seconds remaining to give Emmanuel the victory.

Sophomore forward Mack Spellman (Clinton, NY) paced the Saints with 20 points and 8 rebounds. Spellman scored 18 of his 20 points in the 2nd half. Lindsey recorded his 3rd double-double of the season, scoring 14 points and hauling in a game-high 10 rebounds. Sophomore guard Rob Williams-Hinton (Oak Park, MI) added 10 points and junior center Levi Smith (Tulsa, OK) chipped in with 8 points in the win.

In the game's closing seconds, the Seahawks tied the contest at 54-all. Northwood then missed a free throw attempt, but regained possession of the ball on the rebound. The Saints forced the Seahawks to use two time-outs while trying to inbound the ball. Freshman guard Mike Jackson (New York, NY) then stole the inbounds pass on the Seahawks' third attempt. With the Saints' final possession, Spellman drove the lane, drawing the Northwood defense and dished it off to Lindsey on the left side. Lindsey's shot rattled around before falling through the net, giving Emmanuel a 56-54 edge.

Emmanuel advanced to the tournament championship game on Friday, but fell to Olivet Nazarene, 63-44. Spellman was the only Emmanuel player scoring in double figures. He led the Saints with 14 points, 8 boards, and 4 steals. He was subsequently named to the All-Tournament Team.

The Saints (1-7) are back in action on Tuesday (1/9), when they travel to Nashua, NH to take on the Eagles of Daniel Webster College in a 7:00 pm start.
